On the night between Saturday and Sunday, the town hall was the target of acts of vandalism. Inscriptions such as “Welcome refugees”, “Support to Calais” and “ZAD everywhere” were made with black paint on the façade, on the public reception side and on the staircase in front of the fountain of the esplanade. A window pane on the ground floor was also broken.
No dignified welcome possible
“These acts are proof of great cowardice and I have always said that it was difficult to have any consultation with anonymous people,” said the mayor, Jean-Michel Bernier. A complaint was lodged with the gendarmerie.
These acts intervene in the middle of the debate on the reception of migrants from Calais. “We are in contact with the prefecture but, in the absence of sufficient available space, we cannot properly welcome any more migrants than at present,” said Jean-Michel Bernier.
